Sony Alpha 700 first impressions
7 September 2007 - By Matjaž Intihar. Translation by Jože Svetičič.

Sony 300 mm f/2.8 @ f/4, ISO200, Extra Fine

I think that the sensor itself is the same one that is used in the D300. I'll have to compare them as soon as I get the final versions of both cameras. However, I'm starting to think I know why Canon decided to use a relatively low pixel count for the 40D.

ISO 3200

The in-camera processing is about as subtle as a charging rhino. I'll have to try processing a RAW image.

The camera goes up to ISO 6400.

Despite very low light, it's possible to get the shot. However, don't expect it to be too good.

The camera performed well for real photojournalistic work. Even without being completely familiar with the new features of the Mk III, the settings are easy to use if you know the previous 1D series cameras. But it takes real work to know whether the camera is trustworthy or not. In my opinion, it'll take at least half a year to discover all possible shortcomings. This is why I don't want to give a final opinion for this camera at the start of its career.

More than just a few people buy a top of the line DSLR as their first camera. Is this the right way to get into digital photography? Well, there are two sides to every coin. Those photographers who are willing to invest their time into learning and are really enthusiastic about photography are usually the first to find out all about the advantages, as well as the disadvantages, of using an SLR. Using the instruction manuals, Web resources and photography courses, anyone can learn a lot about photography.

In 2004, Mr. Iwasaki Takaya told me to expect an EOS 3D. This would mean a new, high quality body, with 1Ds Mk II sensor, a high resolution screen and perhaps even video recording. Oh yes, it’s completely unthinkable, video in a still camera.
